SMATV Systems

A SMATV (Satellite Master Antenna Television) allows the viewer to watch multiple programmes on a normal TV or viewing panel without the need for a dedicated receiver at each location.

In addition to the chosen programmes, all 'off air' analogue and digital terrestrial transmissions can also be received. This is achieved by mounting a satellite dish and UHF aerial on the outside of the building, and running five cables to the head end (a head end is where all the SMATV equipment is located). The satellite signals are then amplified and launched into a satellite switch; the switch allows multiple receivers to be run off one satellite dish. A number of receivers are then connected to the switch and set on the predetermined programmes.

The audio and video signal is then taken from the receiver and inputted to delectated modulators. Modulators change the composite signal into a UHF/PAL I signal so the TV's can receive the programmes without any extra tuning or reception equipment. The output of the modulators along with the terrestrial signal are then amplified and launched into the coax cable network.

IRS Systems

An Integrated Reception System, commonly known as IRS, is the complete solution for the provision of digital and analogue services in a multiple dwelling unit. Whether the community resides within a block of apartments, across a housing development, within a hospital, college or a university campus, Edwards Services can provide the complete solution.

An IRS, with its simplified star cable network architecture is ideally suited for distributing digital signals and will also carry the analogue services for as long as the latter are broadcast.

The challenge for the housing industry, including property developers and management companies, is therefore to satisfy the growing demand for access to the full range of digital services and prepare for the governments analogue switch off.

Whilst this transition to digital creates a challenge for the housing industry, the correct solution will create tremendous benefits for both residents and housing bodies. As we are now in the analogue switch-off period (deadline 2012) consumers will expect newly purchased digital receivers (Free View) to work with their existing communal aerial system. Failing to meet this demand will cause frustration and may drive residents to install their own aerial or dish. This in turn will result in poor external aesthetics and possible damage to the building structure.

Residents who have access to the full range of digital services will benefit by having the widest selection of free-to-view and pay TV services plus interactive services such as home banking, on-line shopping, and email as well as making the property more attractive to potential buyers. Residents have the freedom to choose the services best suited to their requirements with no need to install their own aerial or dish.
